About Us Personal Information: I include this page on our website so that potential German Shorthaired pointer puppy owners can know a little about us and what we do. I completed my residency in Obstetrics in Wichita, Kansas. Now we have moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico for a three year period while I train in Maternal-Fetal Medicine. While the hours are rigorous I still find time to do what I love - hunting and training my hunting dogs. We purchased our first German Shorthaired Pointer, Tess, from Janet and Tom Clark at Prairie German Shorthaired Pointers in 2001. She spent her first year in our one bedroom apartment while I was busy with studies in medical school. Her favorite activity at that time was bumping the textbooks out of my hands so that she could have her head scratched. After a year in Kansas City, we moved to Wichita for the clinical years of medical school. It was at this time that we became more active in AKC conformation and hunt tests. Janet handled Tess through a nearly undefeated campaign and she received her AKC Championship in the summer of 2003. She had previously completed her Junior Hunter title with ease and was ready to move on to more advanced testing. We also added the second dog to our family later that summer. Sadie was another gal from Janet and Tom, born to the same dam as Tess but from a different stud. She won my heart immediately with her enthusiasm for birds and retrieving. In late 2003 and then early 2004 I became more interested in participating in the AKC field trials and NAVHDA events. I entered Sadie in a couple of puppy stakes and Derby stakes which she did admirably despite not winning the blue ribbon. Tess also tested in a few Senior Hunt tests, and received two qualifying scores. We are now located on 40 acres near Albuquerque, New Mexico which has become my training grounds for the dogs. We have successfully campaigned our dogs to conformation championships as well as advanced hunt test titles. Breeder Information: I was very fortunate in selecting a quality breeder when I first purchased Tess. Tom and Janet Clark take excellent care of their dogs, and they are very involved in improving the breed through their various litters of German Shorthaired Pointer puppies. I would not hesitate to purchase from them again in the future. There are other breeders out there, however, who are not as praiseworthy. It is important when looking for a new puppy that you keep several things in mind. First, how much experience does the breeder have with the breed. You will want to find a breeder that has been involved not only with breeding but also with conformation or field testing including testing for hunting dogs and for bird dogs. We service mainly Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Missouri, and Texas. Pay attention to what potential puppy sellers tell you about their puppies. A good breeder will care more about placing the right puppy with the right type of family rather than making a sale, even if that means referring on to a different breeder. I stand behind my dogs for life, and I want them to be in a place where they will get the attention they need and be loved as part of the family. It is important also to ask about general health and the presence of genetic problems in the breed. My dogs receive OFA screening at 2 years of age, and I will not breed them unless rated as Good or Excellent. We have used CERF eye exams as well. In addition to testing the parents, I provide an unconditional guarantee against inheritable genetic defects. My general health guarantee covers the puppy from the time it leaves my home until your personal veterinarian evaluates it - generally within 72 hours. Because I cannot control what kind of environment it is exposed to after it leaves my home I do not extend this longer, except in cases in which a veterinarian deems that the health problem began while still in my care. While puppies are in my care they receive regular deworming at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks of age along with basic vaccinations at 6 and 8 weeks. Breeder commitment to their dogs even after sale is also important. If for some reason you are unable to care for your dog later on, your breeder should have in place some system to care for that animal rather than have it end up in a shelter. Your breeder should also be excited to be a source of information for you regarding training, including training for hunting dogs or for bird dogs, or dog problems. I enjoy having new puppy owners contact me with questions, or even having them come by for an afternoon of training. Finally, make sure that you know a little about the parent dogs before deciding on a litter. If you plan to hunt with your puppy, including making them bird dogs, then make sure that one or both of the parents are used as hunting dogs or bird dogs. If you can actually see one or both of the parent dogs it will serve you well in that you will get an idea of what to expect from your little one later on. I do not currently keep any stud dogs at my home because of the difficulty in preventing unplanned litters, but I am always willing to show my gals at work, or you can join me at a hunt test or field trial as well. By keeping these things in mind you will avoid unfortunate mistakes in purchasing a puppy. It has been said that the cheapest part of owning a dog is buying it. Although paying more for your puppy initially does not guarantee that it will be a higher quality dog, it is generally well worth the price. Buying a puppy of lower quality may cost more over the lifetime of the dog in vet bills and frustration. Like many purchases in life, getting the cheapest brand initially usually winds up costing me more later on. Start out right with a quality dog. If you have read this far then you may be on your way toward owning a great puppy which can turn out to be great hunting dogs or bird dogs. I will gladly provide references from people who have purchased puppies from me. Or, if I don't have what you are looking for, I will gladly point you toward other reputable breeders. My goal is to place the right puppy with the right family so that you get years of enjoyment from your purchase. Please fill out our puppy questionnaire if you are interested in purchasing one of our puppies. We service mainly Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Missouri, and Texas. |
